A retired academic orthopedic trauma surgeon who practiced in three major Level 1 Trauma Centers, Dr. Browner has served twenty-seven years in the roles of Division Chief, Department Chair, and Residency Program Director. His current positions are Adjunct Professor and Associate Chair for Education in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at the Duke University School of Medicine.
Pain specialization: Recognizing the significance of musculoskeletal problems and injuries as major causes of pain, Dr. Browner was appointed to the Board of Directors of the US Bone and Joint Initiative (USBJI) in 2016 and now serves as Secretary and a member of the Executive Committee. He is leading the USBJI MSK-Ed Project that will provide MSK education for primary care trainees and practitioners. He has served as Lead Editor of the textbook Skeletal Trauma ED 1-6 since 1987 and Editor-in-Chief of Techniques in Orthopaedics journal for 40 years.
Dr. Browner’s main areas of focus have been complex extremity and pelvic trauma, post-traumatic osteomyelitis, nonunion, malunion, limb salvage and amputations. He is currently working with the Duke Threatened Limb Team and Amputee Rehabilitation Performance Clinic and is continuing his career-long efforts to stimulate inter-institutional research collaboration and international educational exchange.
